6 Things You Need to Know Before Applying for an Internal Wall Insulation Grant
An Internal Wall Insulation Grant is a government grant that will pay for or towards having your internal walls insulated. This grant is available for both home owners, renters and social housing tenants but there are a few things that you need to know before applying for an Internal Wall Insulation Grant. This post will help you to work out if you are eligible and, if so, tell you exactly how to apply.
1. What is an Internal Wall Insulation Grant?
Internal Wall Insulation Grants are available as part of the Government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO). The scheme provides grants for home owners and private renters who would otherwise be unable to afford to insulate their homes. Grants are paid for by energy companies and the scheme aims to reduce fuel poverty while also reducing carbon emissions.
If you are eligible for an Internal Wall Insulation Grant, you can have your interior walls insulated by a registered installer in your area. Internal wall insulation is usually fully-funded under the scheme rules, but only certain properties qualify. Additionally, you will need to apply through an installer that has access to funding. Once your internal wall insulation is installed, your home will stay warmer for longer and you will save on your electric and gas bill, saving you money, but also reducing the carbon emissions produced by your home. To be eligible for an Internal Wall Insulation Grant both you and your property will need to meet the eligibility criteria.
2. Who can apply for a grant?
This grant scheme is open to low-income households and you must live in a property in England, Scotland or Wales. You home needs to be your main residence and you will need to have inefficient heating like electric room heaters or electric storage heaters to qualify.
There are three main ways to qualify for funding:
- The first way to qualify is if you, or a member of your household, receives a qualifying benefit.
Benefits that will entitle you to funding include;
Armed Forces Independence Payment
Attendance Allowance
Carer’s Allowance
Child Benefit
Child Tax Credits
Disability Living Allowance
Income-Based Employment and Support Allowance
Income support
Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
Income-Based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Pension Guarantee Credit
Personal Independence Payment
Severe Disablement Allowance
Tax Credits
Universal Credit
War Pensions Mobility Supplement
Working Tax Credits
If you receive one of these benefits your application is straightforward (as there aren’t any income requirements) so you’ll be eligible regardless of income, savings or assets
This is by far the easiest way to qualify for funding as a Data Match with the DWP will confirm the benefit is received and, as soon as the installer receives that back, they can proceed with installation.
It is worth noting that you don’t need to be currently claiming the benefits to be eligible for the grant, but the benefit has to have been awarded within the previous 18 months before receiving the grant. So, say you stopped working and claimed Universal Credit for just one month in April 2020 and then went back to work earning your normal salary, you can still receive the grant for a year and a half, until October 2021. - The second way to qualify is if you receive Child Benefit. However, unlike the other benefits mentioned, if Child Benefit is the only benefit you receive, you’ll also need to meet the income rules detailed here. It is fairly straightforward to qualify through receiving Child Benefit, but you’ll need to complete a declaration confirming household income and you might also be asked for bank statements and/or payslips or accounts to confirm income received for anyone you live with.
- The third way to qualify is through meeting your Local Authority LA Flex or Local Authority Flexible Energy rules. Usually these rules are targeting householders who don’t claim benefits but live in a home that is inefficient. If you aren’t sure if your home is inefficient, you can check the efficiency of your home on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) register (if your EPC rating is a D, E, F or G then it is classed as inefficient).
We are able to accept LA Flex for a number of council areas including:
Bradford Council
Calderdale Council
Conwy Council
Denbighshire Council
Derbyshire Council
Flintshire Council
Leeds Council
Shropshire Council
South Staffordshire Council
Tamworth Council
Telford Council and more.
3. How to apply for a grant
To see if you qualify for a grant, just visit our website and enter your contact details and then answer some quick questions about your property.
Once your application has been received it usually takes us 24-48 hours to assess the application, but we’ll usually call you within a few hours to let you know if we think you are eligible and, if so, we’ll arrange a free no obligation survey. In some cases we can carry out an initial survey virtually, so if you’d like a virtual survey please let us know when we call.

4. What happens if you are awarded the grant?
After your free no obligation survey, a provisional application will be submitted based on the findings from the survey. It usually takes a day or two for the survey to be uploaded but you’ll be advised regarding whether the property is eligible for a grant within a week of the survey. The surveyor will usually check for all grants and in some cases might identify grants that you weren’t aware of, such as heating upgrades or other insulation options.
If you decide to proceed, the installer will explain the next steps and then gather all documents that are required to submit the full application. You might receive requests to provide evidence such as the land registry or your tenancy agreement.
We go through comprehensive checks at this point to ensure installations are completed correctly and in accordance with the scheme rules. We will also provide you with all the relevant information in case you need help after the installation has taken place.
5. The benefits of applying for and receiving an Internal Wall Insulation Grant
There are many benefits of installing internal wall insulation, which include saving money on your electricity bill and reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere.
When you apply for an Internal Wall Insulation Grant, the free no obligation survey will identify all grants that are possible and that will improve the thermal efficiency of your home.
A grant provides money towards a project, without requiring repayment, so it is very affordable long term – this means when you move house or sell up, you won’t need to pay back any money invested into making improvements to make sure it was insulated properly!
6. When will I know if I have been successful in my application?
If your application for an Internal Wall Insulation Grant is successful, you’ll be notified within a few days of the survey taking place. If your application for an Internal Wall Insulation Grant is unsuccessful, the installer will explain the reasons why and what action to take next. The installer will be able to advise if there are other grant options available to you.
